Why did you do the 2000 hour teacher training?
An extreme need to live ‘true to myself’. I was always confounded when I heard that phrase, ‘be true to myself’ , so I decided that meant giving myself the freedom to follow my heart. Then an 'Aadil in Asheville’ long weekend workshop crossed my path as I was completing a 200 hr training. By the first meal break, I knew my prayers for clarity had been answered. That led to my 500 hr (class of 2009) and subsequent 2000 hr Purna Yoga training (class of 2012) Then, 200 hour Purna teacher training August 2014 really helped me absorb the basics with a much greater joy; it was of the greatest integrity and clarity; offered with the most pure of intentions.
How often & where do you teach?
I teach 2 or 3 short series of Purna Yoga classes during the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters on land at my home studio, Sunny Shore location. I instruct weekly SUP (stand up paddleboard) and SUPurna Yoga™ during the summer at what I call "the studio on the water"…Waconda Bay. I work privately clients year 'round as schedules permit.
This Winter, I’ve begun offering monthly Purna Yoga series’ called “Ease Into Yoga” at Outdoor Chattanooga, a division of The City of Chattanooga, Parks and Rec dedicated to encouraging people to ‘come out and play’. These Purna Yoga classes focus on getting people moving including all types of athletes; with or without injuries. It’s Purna Yoga’s ‘in town’ presence in Chattanooga. They have been well received and we are looking forward to continuing the program this Fall/Winter
Yes, One Joyful Yoga is my ‘day job’. I consider myself a yoga professional : )
Do you teach retreats or workshops?
All the classes at the Sunny Shore location have a retreat flavor as the location is off the beaten path and located on the water. I look forward to expanding the offerings to include full weekend retreats: meditation, SUP, restorative all Purna Yoga style of course.
Do you have any specialties?
PY Restorative (asana and Heartfull meditation™), SUPurna Yoga, Heartfull Meditation™ and Purna Yoga Therapeutics.
Purna Yoga Lifestyle Coaching is a phrase that I heard Brad Waites’ use and it seems to most accurately fit what I offer in the way of Healthy Living choices. I would like to help develop a PY lifestyle series of classes for persons not attracted to ‘yoga’ but wanting to live with greater clarity and ease.
How did the college prepare you to teach & run your business?
I feel like it prepared me to enter into this business with a much greater understanding of my intentions for doing this work. My personal asana and meditation practice feeds my teaching, my teaching feeds the growth of the business as it nourishes the community.
From a purely business standpoint, the College of Purna Yoga business classes covered all the aspects of running a business, legal, ethical and spiritual. I feel I was trained to use the process as a vehicle for continuing to live one's yoga.
I have had other yoga instructors (500 hour trained from other traditions) contact me about licensing and credentialing. My accountant loves me for all the thorough and accurate record keeping I offer her each year.
I never fail to be surprised by the ways I hold myself back and then the beauty of the Divine’s Force flow through this gift we call Om Purna, through my heart and some kind of wonderful happens to everyone touched by One Joyful Yoga, myself included.
Constantly. Isn’t that why we do this? I have always been known for my smile. I can tell you I am standing the most grounded, confident and joyful as ever. And that sure goes a long way with a student who is doing something new.
Advice for someone considering yoga teacher training?
Do not wait for something to happen before you begin. You make it happen. You’ll be surprised how little that other stuff matters on the road to being Joyful. Just follow your heart.
We save those for the bonfires around here :D
